How Do Heat Pumps Work?

April 6, 2023 | Blog

Heat pumps are a useful heating option for many homeowners. Because of how they function, heat pumps provide both cool air in the summer and hot air in the winter.

Tim’s Southern Air and our specialists want to give insight to people who may be interested in changing their cooling systems. Discover why many people are choosing to add heat pumps to their homes and how they will effectively improve your daily life.

Heat Pumps in the Winter

Heat pumps recycle the air in your home to convert cold air into hot air. Heat pumps have refrigerant in them, which is a liquid that helps change the pressure and temperature of gases. Refrigerants change the temperature of the air when it processes through a compressor which also changes the pressure of the air. The more pressure added, the hotter the air gets. It directs cold air outside the house and returns hot air back into the house. This allows for your home to stay warm in the winter.

Heat Pumps in the Summer

Despite the name, heat pumps are also just as effective in the summer. Because the process recycles the air in your home, the refrigerant can also direct cold air into your home and push hot air out. Heat pumps simply reverse the process to instead keep cold air within your home and pipe the hot air out. Refrigerants work both ways to work all year round without hassle.

To recap specifically, your heat pump does the following:

  • Absorbs air through a fan and blows warm air onto a coil in the unit with cool refrigerant
  • Converts the warm air to a low-temperature gas by passing it through the cool refrigerant
  • Compresses the low-temperature gas in a compressor to increase its temperature and pressure
  • Pipes the cold air into the home and pushes the hot air further into the system
  • Pushes the new hot, high-pressure gas through an outdoor coil outside your home and cools the refrigerant from the colder outdoor air
  • Relieves the pressure of the refrigerant through an expansion valve which reduces the temperature
  • Cools down the refrigerant to absorb more air from your home and repeats the process

Heat Pumps in Your Home

There are many benefits to having a heat pump installation in your home. Heat pumps are a popular option because they are cost-effective. Because the refrigerants recycle the air in your home, they won’t need to spend time generating their own air.

These systems can also work for any home. Heat pumps can replace your central air conditioning system and reuse the ducting in your home. If your home does not have ductwork, there are also ductless heat pumps that will work just as well in your home.

Heat pumps can replace your central HVAC, but they can also be a wonderful addition to your existing system. Heat pumps can effectively offset the cost of your main heating system by supporting existing units in both the summer and the winter.
